From the Backland skis to the fantastic Backland boot lineup, Atomic have clearly brought over their world-cup winning designs and applied them to the ski touring market with great success. Now, for the 2022 season, they’ve brought this success to the ski touring helmet category with the Backland Helmet.

Construction

Arguably the most interesting thing to mention about a helmet is, of course, the layers between your head and the hard outer shell – essentially the stuff that keeps your noggin’ safe when you find yourself hitting icy snow at 50 km/h. In this case, it’s Atomic’s AMID construction that makes up this layer.

AMID is essentially Atomic’s impact protection (Atomic Multi-directional Impact Deflector) – a dual-density foam that, Atomic claims, provides up to 40% higher impact protection above industry-wide safety standards.

This level of protection means that the Backland Helmet is able to offer multi-norm certification, meaning it meets skiing, climbing and cycling standards. Why’s this useful? Well perhaps you’re the kind of person who enjoys a multi-sport day, or even a cycle up to the snowline (we’re looking at you, Scottish skiers). Whatever you’re up to on rock, bike, or skis, the helmet will have you covered.

The Backland Helmet has been designed with an in-mould design. This helps to keep the helmet incredibly durable. Plus, thanks to the foam being moulded directly to the PC outer shell, the helmet remains extremely lightweight and safe.

Taking a look at the inside of the helmet, Atomic have made use of a recycled material that’s been certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). As the name suggests, this is the international standard that promotes the use of responsible recycling chains while also looking to decrease the use of chemicals to ultimately improve the social and environmental impact of the material. Much needed stuff, in our opinion.

Finally, you’ve got a handy touch of reflective strips towards the back of the helmet. This is great if you’re looking to use the helmet to cycle on the road, but is also an ideal way to keep yourself, and your group, visible when you’re ski touring up the pistes in the evening.

Atomic have really flexed their muscles in designing this all-new ski touring helmet. The Backland Helmet features all the designs and ventilation that you’d expect to find on a typical ski touring helmet, with a few extra features to keep you that bit safer on the slopes.
